Allow paragraph returns in workflow questions#204

W

I would like the ability to include paragraph returns in our workflow questions. The ability to format them using Markdown already exists, however due to the inability to include returns, we cannot use Markdown to create bullet points. For example, we want to have one of our questions ask for the following information that our clients will write out in a text area answer:

Please provide the following:

  • Full legal name and their relation to you.
  • Background and reasons for why they are being excluded.
  • Any other circumstances or family dynamics that might affect your Executors or Powers of Attorney.

However, it ends up displaying like this when the workflow is being run:

Please provide the following: Full legal name and their relation to you. Background and reasons for why they are being excluded. * Any other circumstances or family dynamics that might affect your Executors or Powers of Attorney. (Ignore the italics, all three asterisks are visible in front of each bullet list item when the workflow is run.)

We can already add paragraph returns to instruction blocks, so unless there’s some underlying programming issue preventing it I don’t see why the same can’t be done with regular questions.

Hi @Welcome ! You can use <br> to add additional line breaks to regular questions, too. See here for more formatting options, and let us know if this meets your needs: https://help.gavel.io/articles/formatting-questions

@Dorna Moini Thank you, that helped me get the paragraph returns I wanted, but the bullet point formatting still doesn’t work unfortunately. I can still work with this though, so it’s fine for now.

Going forward, I would still strongly suggest adding regular paragraph returns and bullet point formating to regular questions, for the simple reason that making formating functionality consistent across the board is more convenient and accessible for all users. As opposed to having some formatting functions apply in some areas but not others, thereby forcing users to go out of their way to figure out what does work or find workarounds.

Hi @Welcome . That makes a lot of sense. We do have on our roadmap to add that functionality visually to the questions (instead of having you use the markdown language at all!).
To get you the results on the immediate bullet points you’re adding, can you message us at help@gavel.io so we can help make sure they work properly for you? From what I’m hearing, you’ll probably want to add a line break between the bullets.

@Dorna Moini I tried adding the breaks in between each line, but the problem still remains that the single asterisks that are supposed to create each bullet point are not doing so. It seems like it’s a backend thing that will require your developers to look into. Should I still send an email to help@gavel.io so they can forward it off to the developers to take a look at?

@Welcome Yes, can you please send the URL of this workflow to help@gavel.io? Our team will be happy to take a look.

@Dorna Moini @Caitlyn (Gavel Team) Turns out this whole issue was simply user error on my part. I didn’t realize I had to double-space my returns in order to get the Markdown bullet points to appear the way I wanted them. You may go ahead and remove this wishlist thread if you’d like.

@Welcome Great, I’m happy to hear this is resolved!
